WEST KINGTON GARDENS OPEN DAY

NOTES from VILLAGE MEETING held on 5 February

Chaired by Tim Holderness-Roddam

At least 8 GARDENS will be OPEN 11am – 5pm on 15 May 2005

Entrance £5, children free

LUNCH – simple cold lunches will be sold from Church Lane Cottage, from 1130 – 230 pm.

A drinks licence may be applied for from Church Lane Cottage.

Toilets will be available at Church Farm, Pound Hill and the Pink Cottage.

Visitors may eat lunch (or eat own picnic) at Plough Cottage or Church Farm.

TEAS will be available 2.30 – 5pm in the gardens at Church Farm, Pound Hill House and The Brook Cottage (or in barns if wet).    Village assistance needed to assemble and take down tables at Pound Hill.

PARKING: Church Farm (cars + 1-2 coaches if necessary), Plough Cottage, and Charnaud field opposite Latimer Farm, called Little Russells. Disabled parking also available at Manor Farm, Brook Farm.

West Kington Nursery will not be holding a public sale on this day.

INFORMATION stands and PLANT SALES opposite Brook Farm and outside Plough Cottage.    Tickets will be distributed to all participating Garden owners and entrances to village by Church Farm and Latimer Farm.

WILLING HELPERS: an encouraging turn out at this meeting should ensure that sufficient willing helpers will be available to sell tickets, steward the gardens, serve the teas, sell the plants, etc etc!

MONEY RAISED will go to maintain and repair the fabric of the church, with a percentage going to Wiltshire Air Ambulance.

OTHER VILLAGE MATTERS
Jeremy Charnaud reported on Neighbourhood Watch, and it was agreed that he should write expressing concern at the declining police presence.

Mark Webb proposed holding a social village BBQ on the evening before the Gardens Day, another suggestion was that a BBQ be held as a fund raiser later in the year.

A short discussion took place on the future of the church.    12 windows need repair or replacing at £1,000 each, two parts of the roof need attention at £15,000 each – approximate figures.   Income from the village more or less matches annual expenditure with nothing left over for maintenance and repair.   Tim Holderness-Roddam asked the PCC to arrange an open meeting once the 2005 quinquennial report had been received.

Communication:  We ask you to help distribute Gardens Day flyers, which will be delivered to each house (or download the high resolution flyer (0.9Mb) and print your own).   Please contact us if you would like small or large laminated posters to display at your place of work, shop, group, etc.

Hannah Gutteridge offered the use of a decorated car for publicity – a great offer!

Tim thanked everyone for attending as well as those who had given their apologies, and also those unable to attend who are already working to make the day a great success.

ST MARY THE VIRGIN CHURCH, WEST KINGTON. Barbara and Philip Stockitt have kindly offered the PCC the opportunity to have a stall at the West Kington Nurseries Open Days on 6 & 7 September 2003. We are therefore planning to have a West Kington Kitchen Stall selling home made cakes, jams, chutney and marmalades.

We would like to have as many cakes as possible and would therefore be happy if all cake bakers kept account of their expenses so that they can be re-imbursed.

If you are prepared to make cakes or biscuits for the stall, please contact Anne Barnitt (782099) or Daphne Smith (782218) If you are prepared to make jam or chutney for sale, have surplus fruit in your garden, or have empty jam jars, please contact Julia Cockell (782267)

Broadband
You may be interested in looking at www.fdmbroadband.net. I have spoken to them and are waiting for them to come back with a date so they can visit and assess the suitability of the area. If we could get the transmitter aerial somewhere where it could cover Nettleton, West K and outlying homes we might be in with a chance of getting the minimum of 50 potential subscribers.

Garden Day

Many thanks to Rick and Dido Lamb for a most pleasant pre-occasion barbecue

Many determined visitors braved the rain and came to see us on the day anyway, but the indoor events were particularly welcome.

Hoax Email Alert
There are a number of emails in circulation with headings like: "Genuine request for help in research" which request you to propagate a chain letter to everyone in your address book. This a ploy used by spammers to collect email addresses. In fact, dare I say it, be suspicious of any email with the word 'genuine' in its title.

Hoax Virus Alert
There are a number of hoax virus alerts being circulated in email by people with the best of intentions, but insufficient cynicism. Please don't propagate them any further; and above all don't delete anything unless Norton / McAfee etc. tells you to do so. See Symantec for more information.
